QPR eye Granqvist

Mark Hughes is considering a January transfer move for Andreas Granqvist in an attempt to haul Queens Park Rangers out of relegation trouble.

• Blog: In-fighting comes to the fore

Rangers manager Hughes has become the latest in a growing number of Premier League managers to express an interest in signing the Genoa defender.

Hughes is facing an increasingly difficult task of saving his job at Loftus Road, with the club bottom of the league and rumours of long-standing QPR players' disenchantment with expensive signings this summer who do not care about the club's relegation plight.

The Welshman has identified Swedish international Granqvist as one of his main priorities in the January window and wants owner Tony Fernandes to sanction a £4.5m offer for the 27-year-old, who only moved to Genoa in 2011.

Sources close to the defender confirmed to ESPN: "There is an interest from Queens Park Rangers for Granqvist, but Liverpool and Newcastle are also considering the situation."

Hughes is desperate to improve a defence which has conceded almost two goals per game in 12 matches so far, but faces competition for the former Wigan Athletic defender.

Alan Pardew has held preliminary negotiations for the Swede, but the Newcastle boss has reservations over whether owner Mike Ashley will sanction the spending.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has authorised several scouting missions to Serie A in recent weeks and Granqvist is aware of the interest from Anfield.

Granqvist said recently that he is "flattered" by the prospect of a possible move to Anfield and a second chance in the Premier League – five years after a miserable spell with Wigan.

He made just 14 appearances for Wigan following a £750,000 move in June 2007, before departing for Dutch club Groningen in 2008.

Granqvist wants another crack at the Premier League, despite having two years still to run on his £23,000-a-week deal with Genoa.
