Werner vows to keep Suarez, strengthen in January

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has joined manager Brendan Rodgers in insisting that Luis Suarez will be staying at Anfield.

• Blog: An alternative reality

Werner watched Suarez score twice in a 3-0 victory over Wigan on Saturday, taking his Premier League goal total for the season to ten.

The Uruguay international has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent days, although Manchester City moved quickly to distance themselves from reports of a planned £40 million January bid.

Rodgers made clear at a press conference last Thursday that the striker would be staying put, saying: "He's not for sale."

And asked if there was any prospect of Suarez being sold, Werner told the Daily Telegraph: "Absolutely not.

"He's a beautiful player to watch and, as a Liverpool fan, I hope I'm watching him for many years to come. We made a long-term contract with him in the summer and we are going to see a lot of his play at Liverpool."

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who marked his return to action after seven games out with a hamstring injury by keeping a clean sheet, echoed Werner's sentiments.

"Suarez is on fire," Reina told the Liverpool Daily Post. "He looks like he will score in every game. He will attract the interest of many clubs. That is only normal.

"But he says he is quite happy at Liverpool and that is the most important thing for us and the supporters. He is a top-class striker. He is a Liverpool striker."

Werner, meanwhile, has promised that the club's board will work with Rodgers in January to strengthen a squad short of cover.

Plans are in place to sell winger Stewart Downing to raise some money to fund signings, with the priority a striker to provide support for Suarez.

"Our intention is to strengthen but actions will speak louder than words," Werner said. "We are playing better and better each week. Obviously, we have made some mistakes in the past but our intention is to deliver, strengthen the squad and move forward.

"We know that January is a challenging time and I don't want to say we've got x or y but, hopefully, the fans will be pleased with what we do accomplish."
