Gomis: Lyon among title contenders

Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis suggested his side could be among the Ligue 1 title contenders after they went top of the table at the weekend.

A 3-0 home win against Reims on Sunday has put Les Gones at the summit on 25 points, one ahead of Bordeaux following their win over Marseille and two in front of Paris Saint-Germain, who lost 2-1 at home to Rennes.

France international Gomis, who scored his sixth league goal of the season, believes the seven-times champions, who last won the title in 2008, can keep pace with the other challengers this term.

"We have taken the lead and it is not by accident," he said. "It feels good when you see the progress made since the beginning of the season."

Asked about the possibility of winning the league, he added: "It is still too early. It has happened in the past that top teams during the season are not even qualified for Europe at the end.

"We do not expect to remain leaders throughout the season, but the goal is to stay close to the leaders to be in the best position for the final sprint. We will savour it, but we must quickly focus on the Europa League and then move on to Toulouse."

Gomis's goal against Reims was his second in a week following his winner in Wednesday night's 2-1 friendly victory over Italy in Parma, and the 27-year-old is enjoying his run of form.

"I am well placed when the ball comes to me," he said. "It shows that I am in a good shape."
