Sir Alex lauds Canaries

Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Norwich City after they repeated their heroics of 2005 to beat Manchester United at Carrow Road.

Anthony Pilkington's superb header proved to be the matchwinner for the Canaries as their fine run of form continued.

While the Manchester United boss was disappointed to lose the game, he acknowledged the effort the home side had put in to take the three points.

Sir Alex told ESPN: "We're disappointed to lose the game but we have to give credit to Norwich for the way they fought and battled for every ball on the pitch. They defended fantastically well and the goalkeeper also had a really good night so it's disappointing.

"It was a marvellous cross and a marvellous touch so the goalkeeper could do nothing about that. They deserved the win just because they worked so hard for it. The players are used to making comebacks and we're always a threat in the last minutes of matches. We had a lot of half-chances but it just wasn't our night.

"We always miss our good players but we had plenty of good players on the pitch."

Matchwinner Pilkington said the result marked the emergence of a new "ruthless'' Norwich.

Pilkington told ESPN: "We've been a bit more ruthless and we're putting our chances away; maybe we could have had another one at the end to make it a bit more comfortable. It's a great day for Norwich and it's a massive win for us.

"We've been performing well over the last couple of weeks and we showed today that we could beat the team that is probably the best in the league.''

Canaries midfielder Wes Hoolahan added: "It's amazing. Credit to the fans, they roared us on and we were due a win against one of the big teams. It's difficult, you might not have a lot of possession of the ball but the team was excellent today and we worked hard.

"We knew that they were the comeback kings so it's great to get the three points.''
