Vukcevic awakes from coma

Hoffenheim's Boris Vukcevic has awoken from a coma eight weeks after his involvement in a serious car accident.

• Vukcevic in coma
• Vukcevic may have collapsed

Vukcevic, 22, lost control of his car and crashed into a truck coming from the opposite direction in September.

For over two weeks the player had remained in critical condition, with a medical report showing he had low blood sugar levels at the time of the incident.

Vukcevic is currently being treated in a rehabilitation facility and is reportedly conscious for a couple of hours every day, being able to communicate with his immediate family.

Due to severe injuries to his head it is, however, not possible to give a reliable prognosis as to when Vukcevic will regain full health. Only his immediate family are visiting him, Hoffenheim have reported.

"We are very happy that it is steadily getting better for Boris. Our thoughts are with him every day," Hoffenheim general manager Andreas Muller said.

"We, the players, his colleagues, of course would like to visit him. But that is absolutely secondary right now. It is more important he gets the best possible treatment for his recovery. We have the greatest sympathy for his family."

Vukcevic's parents, Dragan and Sonja, are in close contact with the club.

"We are pleased, Boris is making progress. But we ask you, in the interest of our son, to respect he still has a long way to go and needs a lot of rest," they said.

The midfielder has played 78 matches for Hoffenheim, scoring six goals.
