Chile sacks coach Claudio Borghi

Argentinean Claudio Borghi was sacked Thursday as coach of the Chilean national team after Chile's 3-1 loss to Serbia in Wednesday's international friendly.

"I was fired," Borghi told reporters after the match in Switzerland.

Borghi took over Chile's team in 2011 and they have lost their last five matches. The team lost a friendly to Ecuador this past August as well as three 2014 World Cup qualifying matches in South America to Colombia (3-1), Ecuador (3-1) and Argentina (2-1).

Chile has 12 points and is in sixth place, out of World Cup qualifying.

"After these matches, the outcome has not been good," said Borghi, who was with the Argentinean world champion team in 1986. "I met a few minutes ago with two persons from the directive (Chile Pro Football Association) and they asked me to step aside.

"The best stage of my life is over, but I am calm adn proud to have been in this job."

Chilean media outlets reported Thursday that Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli, the current coach of the Universidad de Chile team, is the principal contender for the job.

Information from Efe News Agency was used in this report.
