Evra: City cannot compete with United

Patrice Evra has begun the war of words ahead of next month's Manchester derby by denying United have ever been threatened by City.

• Cantona open to United return

Evra, 31, has spent six years at Old Trafford and witnessed the rise of City last season as they stole United's glory on the final day.

But Evra insists that despite being Premier League champions, City have never been able to match it with their cross-city rivals.

"There is not really a rivalry between the two clubs, as United have always been superior to City," Evra said. "We have always been Manchester's first club. The fact that they won the title last season changes nothing."

Evra provided an assist during France's 2-1 friendly win over Italy on Wednesday when his cross-shot was turned in by Bafetimbi Gomis.

Following the chaotic scenes in the French camp at South Africa 2010, Evra has a new drive to succeed and admits it will be a 'failure' if he doesn't win any silverware with Les Bleus.

"After World Cup 2010, Italy improved their way of playing and their results, but France had more difficulties," Evra told Gazzetta Dello Sport. "Now I want to win with my national team, it will be a failure for me not winning.

"With [former France coach Laurent] Blanc I lost my position as a regular player, now with [Didier] Deschamps things are better. He said to me 'only if you play well you will be a regular player."
