Myhill accepts bench role

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Boaz Myhill is preparing to face Chelsea at The Hawthorns on Saturday knowing that even a heroic performance is unlikely to nail down a regular place.

• Blog: Defences go under the rader

Myhill impressed in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Wigan when handed his first Premier League appearance in more than 18 months, but he knows he is merely keeping the place warm for when Ben Foster has recovered from the minor groin surgery he underwent in Germany last week.

Foster has not yet been ruled out of the weekend clash, although the game at Sunderland the following Saturday appears a more realistic comeback target.

"I prepared all last week knowing I would have a chance to play in the game at the weekend," Myhill said on the club's official website. "The manager said 'enjoy it' and we all did. You can tell by the way we all played that everyone was in it together and it was a great team performance.

"When I am needed, hopefully I can step in and do well, as I did on Saturday, but, at the risk of sounding like I don't want to play, Ben has been a top performer at this club for 18 months and, if I was him, I would expect it to take a lot more than this to get someone who has played as well as that out of the side."

Myhill turned 30 last week and has played more times for Wales this season than for Albion, for whom his only other appearance was in a Capital One Cup win at Yeovil.

He spent last season on loan in the Championship at Birmingham but has been a regular occupant of the bench so far in 2012-13.

"I enjoyed playing in a good side on Saturday and if I am needed again at the weekend, I will try my best to perform well again," he added.
