Ronaldo ruled out with eye injury

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of Wednesday's friendly with Gabon in Libreville with a cut above his left eye.

• Blog: Youth wins the way

Ronaldo sustained the injury during the league game at Levante after he was caught by defender David Navarro's elbow early on in the 2-1 win at the Estadio Cuitat de Valencia.

The 27-year-old had the gash patched up and returned to score the opening goal in the 21st minute, his 12th league goal of the season, but he was substituted at half-time.

After the match, Real boss Jose Mourinho said that Ronaldo had temporarily lost vision in both eyes, and medics for the Portuguese federation (FPF) assessed the forward before deciding against letting him travel with the rest of the squad.

"He has a craniofacial trauma, with an injury to his eyelid and the eye," Dr Henrique Jones said. "He has dizzy spells, problems with his vision and a headache. There is no sense in making him travel, because in these situations there is a critical period of 72 hours."

Navarro released a statement via Levante's club site saying the incident was accidental, and he had never meant to hurt him.

The FPF confirmed in a statement that Ronaldo would be replaced by Valencia defender Joao Pereira for the trip to Africa, while Dynamo Kiev midfielder Miguel Veloso has also pulled out due to injury.
