De Rossi dropped from Italy squad

Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli has taken a hardline approach to Daniele De Rossi's indiscipline by dropping the Roma midfielder from his squad to face France.

De Rossi, 29, was sent off for punching Lazio's Stefano Mauri just hours before the latest selection was due to be named and has once again fallen foul of the 'Code of Ethics' Prandelli put in place when he took over the national team in the summer of 2010.

Speaking shortly after watching the Giallorossi lose 3-2 to their local rivals Lazio, club General Manager Franco Baldini revealed De Rossi will be fined for his actions but will not be, contrary to recent reports, leaving the capital anytime soon.

Baldini told Sky Italia: "The club's position is clear, as in these cases players can be fined based on how long they are going to be suspended. I spoke to Daniele before the game and he wanted to do well, so was really determined to achieve a positive result. Perhaps seeing Lazio fight back to go in front brought this reaction out of him.

"Are we considering offers for De Rossi? Nothing has changed compared to the summer, I have always said that there is no need to sell Daniele and we do not want to sell him." Meanwhile, Newcastle full-back Davide Santon has been recalled to the Italy squad after a three-year absence.

Santon, still only 21, first broke into the Azzurri setup back in 2009 after hugely impressing under the guidance of Jose Mourinho at Inter, but his career stalled after the Portuguese manager lost faith in a player once compared to Paolo Maldini. He has suffered further setbacks due to a recurring knee problem but has revived his fortunes since moving to the Premier League last year.

Italy squad to face France on Wednesday, November 14:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris Saint-Germain), Emiliano Viviano (Fiorentina)

Defenders: Davide Astori (Cagliari), Federico Balzaretti (Roma), Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini (all Juventus), Domenico Criscito (Zenit St. Petersburg), Christian Maggio (Napoli), Davide Santon (Newcastle)

Midfielders: Antonio Candreva (Lazio), Alessandro Diamanti (Bologna), Alessandro Florenzi (Roma), Emanuele Giaccherini, Claudio Marchisio (both Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Milan), Andrea Pirlo (Juventus), Marco Verratti (Paris Saint-Germain)

Forwards: Mario Balotelli (Manchester City), Mattia Destro (Roma), Stephan El Shaarawy (Milan), Sebastian Giovinco (Juventus), Daniel Osvaldo (Roma)
