Wilshere surprised by England recall

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said his return to the England fold had come "a bit too soon" after being named in Roy Hodgson's squad for next week's friendly against Sweden.

After Gunners manager Arsene Wenger questioned the wisdom of Wilshere's international recall just three games into his comeback after a 17-month injury lay-off, 20-year-old Wilshere told the BBC he was surprised to be back in the England squad.

"It is a bit too soon," he said. "But it is great for my head and my confidence to know that I am in the plans of the new manager.

"The last time I played for England was under Fabio Capello, so I didn't know if I would fit in or be in the plans of the new manager, because everyone can see there is a different style of play now.

"This is a new chapter in my footballing career. There is a totally new England squad now. I played with the likes of Tom Cleverley and Chris Smalling for the under-21s and they have broken into the first team, which is good for our future."

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been boosted by the return to action of first-choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny in an under-21 game against West Ham.

The Pole has not featured for Arsenal since their 6-1 win against Southampton in August because of an ankle injury.

Wenger's side have suffered a defensive slump in his absence, keeping one clean sheet in their last nine games.
