England call on Wilshere and Osman

Jack Wilshere has been named in Roy Hodgson's England squad for their friendly match against Sweden next week while there is a surprise call-up for Leon Osman.

• Hodgson sure on Jenkinson

Wilshere, 20, has only recently made his return after 15 months on the sidelines due to ankle and foot problems, with the midfielder making three appearances for his club Arsenal so far this season.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger recently expressed his concern about overloading Wilshere with game time after such a lengthy period out of the game, but Hodgson has called on the youngster for next Wednesday's trip to Stockholm.

The midfielder is suspended for Arsenal's Premier League meeting with Fulham this weekend after his sending off at Manchester United, with this rest time perhaps playing its part in him being named by Hodgson.

Everton's Osman, 31, will also be among the party after his fine form for his club was rewarded with a first call-up to the international senior fold.

Of the younger personnel involved, Liverpool's Raheem Sterling, 17, is named as part of an original England squad for the first time, while his team-mate Jonjo Shelvey is also called upon.

England captain Steven Gerrard is poised to make his 100th appearance for his nation, in what is the Three Lions' final match of 2012.
