Diego dismisses Atletico rumours

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego has denied being in contact with his former club Atletico Madrid regarding a return.

Diego, 27, enjoyed a successful one-year loan spell with Atletico Madrid last year, helping the Spanish side lift the Europa League trophy.

Reports in the Spanish media have suggested that Diego could return to Madrid as early as the winter, but Diego wants to focus on getting Wolfsburg back into the top half of the Bundesliga table.

"I get a lot of coverage in Spain," Diego told kicker. "But I can confirm: I don't have any contact with Atletico.

"I am in Wolfsburg now and very pleased about my situation. I am just hoping this season has a happy ending."

Wolfsburg fired their coach Felix Magath in October and "lifted a burden" from the team, as Diego remarked shortly after his sacking.

Caretaker coach Lorenz Gunter Kostner has helped to guide the club from bottom of the league, but has not been able to free them from relegation trouble yet.

"We are prepared for the relegation fight. We need to bond, and we will get out there," Diego said, who admitted "when I look at the standings there is not a lot joy".

The midfielder, however, added: "I trust us to reach the top eight. But I also know: Our situation is complicated. We must try and get forward step by step. We must add our individual qualities up, so we are successful.

At home, Wolfsburg have only accrued one point in four matches and face Bayer Leverkusen, who left a mark with their win away to Bayern Munich, on Sunday.
