Ibrahimovic ban extended by league

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has had his suspension for his red card against Saint-Etienne last weekend doubled by the French league's disciplinary committee.

The Sweden international was sent off during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at the Parc des Princes for a high-footed challenge on goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier with 20 minutes of the game remaining. Just three minutes later, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted what proved to be the winner for the visitors, consigning PSG to their first defeat of the season.

Referee Stephane Duhamel showed Ibrahimovic a straight red card, automatically incurring a one-match ban for Ligue 1's top scorer this season.

"It was not my intention to hurt the goalkeeper," Ibrahimovic said after the game. "I looked at the ball and when I saw the goalkeeper, it was too late.

"Everything happened very quickly. This is a foot in the air, so it gives the impression of being a violent action, but people who know me know that I don't try to hurt anyone."

However, on Wednesday the LFP's disciplinary committee imposed a two-match ban on the 31-year-old.

"Ibrahimovic has been penalised for two games for firm foul play," LFP chairman Pascal Garibian said. "A bad foul is a foul which puts the opponent's fitness in danger. The absence of the will to injure the opponent doesn't matter. Otherwise, it would have an action designed to hurt, and the punishment would be different."

The ban means that Ibrahimovic will now miss the home game against Rennes on November 17 as well as this weekend's trip to defending champions Montpellier.
