Braga boss hopes United stand by Nani

Braga manager Jose Peseiro is hopeful that Nani still has a future at Manchester United amid uncertainty over the Portugal international's Old Trafford future.

• Brassell: No more Mr Nice Guy

Nani, 25, has started just four Premier League matches for United this season and, with his contract at the club due to expire in the summer of 2014, speculation has increased over whether he will remain with the Red Devils.

Peseiro worked with Nani during his time at Sporting Lisbon prior to his £25 million move to United in 2007 and is keen to face the midfielder when Braga and Sir Alex Ferguson's side meet in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

He said in the Manchester Evening News: "I don't know why Nani doesn't play now. I know the team is good. Manchester United doesn't just have 11 players, but 20 at the similar top level and it's hard.

"I don't know if the problem is that he doesn't sign another contract - I don't know if that is true or not true. I don't know if the coach has less confidence in him, or if he just doesn't feel right at this moment.

"I would like Nani to play and play well - but not too well or to score in our goal. I hope he finishes the season well because it is important for him, the national team - and important for me because I put Nani in the first team at Sporting.

"I took him from the Under-18s and put him in the first team because he played well. I hope he plays more times, because I know him. If he doesn't play, it is not easy for him. He doesn't feel well when he doesn't play - because he likes to play."
