Drogba seeking fresh start with Shanghai

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has committed his future to new side Shanghai Shenhua and vows he will stay to make a fresh start after a tough few months in China.

Drogba, 34, has scored eight goals in 11 games since arriving at the club in the summer. But, despite his arrival, Shanghai spent the second half of the season in turmoil as they changed manager three times, were the subject of speculation that owner Zhu Jun would be required to withdraw his funding, and finished the campaign ninth out of 16 clubs.

The Ivorian, though, is happy to stay and hopes to turn the club's fortunes around with the help of former Chelsea team-mate Nicolas Anelka.

"Because I joined Shenhua relatively late, I didn't prepare with the team early in the season, so our results this year were not very good," he said, according to the Shanghai Morning Post. "But I hope next season I can start again from the beginning with Shenhua."

Drogba has certainly become a huge hit with the Shanghai fans, with supporter Bobby Lu telling AFP: "Drogba is massive - he motivates the players, he reactivated Anelka, and terrified the opponents. He's the king no doubt."
