Hoeness urges Bayern to wipe away Lille

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich have been told to "wipe away" French side Lille on Wednesday night to avoid risking an early exit from the Champions League.

Bayern are currently third in the group standings having picked up six points in three games, a return that has not impressed those in the club's hierarchy and one that sees them level with BATE Borisov and Valencia.

A fortnight ago, Bayern escaped Lille with a narrow 1-0 win and Bayern president Uli Hoeness has now advised his team to "wipe away" the French side as "it could get really dramatic" if they do not. Despite the fact that Lille have not picked up a point in three matches, manager Jupp Heynckes knows they will fight for their last chance to stay in Europe.

"They'll try everything," he warned. "In the reverse fixture they proved they have incredible power, they're prepared to mix it and they'll fight. I'm expecting the same on Wednesday."

Bayern picked up a lot of confidence after their 3-0 win away to Hamburg at the weekend but Heynckes added: "I still expect a great deal from my team. At the moment it's too euphoric, over-positive. We've achieved absolutely nothing yet."

Bayern are set to start the match with wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, but could be without striker Mario Mandzukic. The Croatia international missed Tuesday's final pre-match training session with a cold and could be replaced by Claudio Pizarro.

Meanwhile, Lille boss Rudi Garcia has claimed that his side must beat the odds in order to get a result against a team who have won 15 of their last 16 games in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena.

"The special thing about football is that an outsider is always able to beat a champion. There are many examples of this," Garcia told UEFA.com. "We want to risk something - we are not here to give away three points and return home without having tried everything.

"Of course we are not in the very best situation. We need to put on a good performance. It is our last chance. Of course it will be the most difficult game in the group, here in Munich at Bayern's home ground, but we will give everything and are looking forward to this challenge.

"In the first game, we could have risked more. We should not forget that there are not too many teams that have won here in Munich, either in the Bundesliga or in the Champions League. It is a privilege to be here, to play against Bayern. We want to enjoy being here and we hope to put on a really great performance."

Salomon Kalou on the Lille official website: "We must redouble our strength because Bayern are strong. Bayern are a remarkably well organised team with a lot of great offensive players who can make the difference at any time."
