Chelsea choose to ban fan

Chelsea have revealed that they have banned one of their fans from Stamford Bridge pending the conclusion of a police investigation into a possible racially aggravated public order offence.

The supporter in question, who was identified in British newspapers as 28-year-old Gavin Kirkham, was pictured making what appeared to be 'monkey gesture' in the direction of Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck during last week's Capital One Cup tie at Stamford Bridge.

Blues chiefs have acted quickly to ban the supporter from their ground, though it seems as if he may only be an occasional visitor to Chelsea home games after the club confirmed: "The man is not a current Chelsea FC season-ticket holder or member."

The Chelsea statement went on to confirm they cooperating fully with the police as they carry out their investigation.
