Ridgewell: West Brom are underachieving

Liam Ridgewell believes that West Bromwich Albion should be even higher in the Premier League, but he concedes it is only a matter of time before the pundits write them off.

• Clarke relieved with form return

Two consecutive defeats had cost Steve Clarke's side some of their early-season momentum and turned up the heat for the Monday night visit of bottom club Southampton.

But a solid 2-0 victory lifted the club back up after they twice had a taste of the top three in September.

"I think we deserve to have even more points," Ridgewell said. "We were disappointed not to get anything out of the Newcastle and Manchester City games. This game was all about making sure we got a result.

"If we had lost again, people would have said the start of the season was a fluke. But that isn't pressure. Pressure is when you have Manchester United away and you are second from bottom.

"This is a great bunch, a really good squad, and hopefully we can keep it going. You want to establish yourselves in the Premier League like Stoke and Fulham have done."

The 27-year-old is keeping at bay the competition of team mate Goran Popov for a starting place at left-back and he believes Albion have more than enough cover to fulfill their pre-season objectives.

"The main thing is just to keep it going," he said. "This strength in depth is what the gaffer wanted and what we will need.

"We are sitting fifth and doing well but our target was to stay in the league - and anything after that was a bonus. The only people who might get carried away with it is people who aren't part of the camp. We will go to Wigan on Saturday full of confidence again."
