Strachan in frame for Scotland

Former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has emerged as the early frontrunner to succeed Craig Levein as Scotland manager.

Strachan has been out of football management since leaving Middlesbrough in 2010, but bookmakers in Scotland were slashing their odds on the former Manchester United midfielder making a return in the cause of national duty following Levein's departure.

Former Rangers and Scotland manager Alex McLeish is also in the frame to make a return his old job, although he indicated in a talkSPORT interview on Monday that he was backing Strachan for the role.

"Gordon looks a pretty good choice," he said. "I don't want to say I don't want the Scotland job but I feel I've still got some time left in club football."

Other names in the frame include Owen Coyle, who was recently sacked as Bolton boss, and former Hearts, Stoke and Bristol City boss Joe Jordan, who was most recently first-team coach at Tottenham Hotspur.

Jordan told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I know there will be a lot of names, a lot of speculation. I am Scottish, I'm a proud Scotsman and a person that wants to work and for my name to be mentioned, yes, it's nice to be linked with the national job."

Scottish FA chiefs were pressed to explain the four-day consultation period that preceded news of Levein's sacking on Monday, with SFA chief Stewart Regan defending the manner of his exit.

"Craig was kept fully informed of the events of recent days and, as a board, we had every right to ask for more information to make sure we made the right decision for Scottish football," Regan said.

Scotland currently sit bottom of their World Cup qualifying Group A and find themselves lagging behind Libya and Cape Verde Islands in the latest FIFA rankings list.
