Boniek backs Zeman

Former Roma star Zbigniew Boniek has insisted coach Zdenek Zeman deserves patience as he looks to put his mark on the team.

Zeman replaced Luis Enrique in the summer but has come under pressure after a disappointing start to the season. Boniek, now the chairman of the Polish FA, said he must be given time to make the necessary changes.

"We ought to give time to the coach and allow him to grow the team," he told Radio Manà. "He is not the problem or the cause for this negative moment. There are fans who are getting angry with Zeman when three months ago they welcomed him as the saviour."

Meanwhile, Parma president Tommasso Ghirardi has dismissed Zeman's complaints that the state of the Stadio Tardini pitch contributed to Roma's 3-2 defeat on Wednesday.

The game was played in a relentless downpour but Ghirardi suggested the surface affected his own side more.

"We put in an impressive performance and, in fact, dry turf would've favoured us even more because we do well with pace on the counter-attack," he told Sky Italia.
