Allardyce: Goals will come for Carroll

Sam Allardyce says he is not concerned by Andy Carroll's failure to score for West Ham United since arriving at the club in August, arguing that the on-loan forward's performances have been just as effective, as well as indicative that a goal will come.

• Cox: Doubts still linger for City

Despite generally playing well and proving a valuable asset in the Hammers' aerial attacks, the former Liverpool forward has yet to hit the net in six appearances. Allardyce, though, believes it is just a question of getting to fully know the playing styles of his new team-mates.

"I think he's a little frustrated by it but that's the issue," Allardyce said. "I think the more and more he plays, with the players we've got, the more and more he can start to read how the situation develops and hopefully get on the end of it.

"He had one very good chance at Wigan, which dropped to his right foot, and I think probably, in his heyday, he probably would have just volleyed it straight away. He just tried to bring it down and miscontrolled it.

"It's not all about Andy and his heading ability. He's very, very good at scoring goals on the floor as well, so we have got to keep providing the service and, eventually, he'll start putting it in the net, we hope."

Despite Carroll's lack of goals, Allardyce has been impressed with his striker's workrate and said the striker often feels he doesn't get the free-kicks that he should.

"The fans at West Ham love committed players and they love players who give their all and I think Andy wears his heart on his sleeve somewhat," Allardyce said. "I think part of Andy's frustration has been the amount of times he seems to be fouled these days but doesn't get the free-kicks against him that he deserves.

"He has to understand that's probably always going to be the case but, for him, it's not to get frustrated by that. It's about making runs in the right positions and to just keep showing that commitment. Eventually it will pay off for him and for us.

"What I do think is that he's not just a goalscorer. That's 90% of his game. I think he's an all-round front-man in terms of his hold-up play and his movement as well as his ability to score goals."
