Jose gives Sao Paulo the edge

Willian Jose was the hero for Sao Paulo as the striker scored both goals in his side's 2-0 win over reigning champions Universidad de Chile in their Copa Sudamericana quarter-final first leg.

Jose, 20, opened the scoring inside eight minutes and doubled his account just 10 minutes later, giving the Brazilians the perfect start.

Any chance of a Universidad comeback was diminished when Eugenio Mena was sent off in just the 25th minute, giving the Chileans little hope of fighting their way back into the match.

The loss ends Universidad's 25-match unbeaten run and puts any chance they had of defending their title in severe doubt as they face a tough return trip to Brazil on November 7.

Jose's goals come after a two-month scoreless run and he said after the game that it was the perfect way to silence the doubters.

"After fans booed me at the Morumbi (Stadium), I trained very hard for another opportunity and I grabbed it with both hands. Thank God I managed to play a good match and I've been blessed with two goals tonight," he said.
