PSV, Ajax forced to earn Cup wins

PSV Eindhoven are on track to defend their Dutch Cup title with a 3-1 win over EHC Hoensbroek.

Memphis Depay opened the scoring for PSV after just 20 minutes, but it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Eredivisie side, with EHC pressuring their hosts deep into the second half.

PSV's resilience eventually wore down the EHC defence as Georginio Wijnaldum grabbed his side's second in the 74th minute. Ron Starmans pulled one back for the visitors, but Gianluca Maria sealed the result for PSV in injury time.

Eredivisie champions Ajax eliminated ONS Sneek with a 2-0 away win.

Just like PSV, Ajax were made to earn their place in the fourth round with the home side holding out until Viktor Fischer and Stefano Denswil struck late in the second half to send them through.

Elsewhere, a Samuel Armenteros brace handed Heracles a 2-0 win over second division side Sparta Rotterdam, Zwolle defeated fellow Eredivisie outfit RKC Waalwijk 4-2 and NAC Breda needed penalties to see off HBS Craeyenhout.

Vitesse Arnhem were the big winners on Wednesday night with a comfortable 4-0 win over Staphorst thanks to a brace from Wilfried Bony as well as goals to Jonathan Reis and Davy Propper.
