Saints to investigate Boruc

Southampton have launched a formal investigation into allegations that goalkeeper Artur Boruc threw a water bottle at fans during their home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

The club were also looking into claims the 32-year-old former Celtic player swore at supporters after conceding a second goal on his home debut in the 2-1 Premier League loss at St Mary's.

Several reports suggested Saints had studied video evidence and decided Boruc had no case to answer but in a statement released to Press Association Sport this morning they said: "Southampton Football Club can confirm that it is investigating allegations of an incident involving Artur Boruc that occurred towards the end of the first half during Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur.

"The club takes such allegations extremely seriously and will deal with the matter in the appropriate manner."

In August 2006 Boruc was cautioned by Strathclyde Police for 'a breach of the peace' after making gestures at Glasgow Rangers fans. He courted further controversy in April 2008 when he wore a t-shirt with the message 'God bless the Pope'.

Boruc is the third player to appear in goal for Southampton this season, after former number one Kelvin Davis lost his place to Paulo Gazzaniga. The newly-promoted side have taken just four points from their opening nine fixtures and sit 19th in the league table.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
