Cruzeiro attempt to lure Riquelme

Brazilian club Cruzeiro are hoping to make a successful second attempt to secure the services of Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, a former player has revealed.

Juan Pablo Sorin, who spent five seasons with Cruzeiro over two spells, told Brazilian newspaper Ole that he was issued to broker a deal between Riquelme and the club earlier this year.

Although the two parties failed to reach an agreement on that occasion, Sorin believes Cruzeiro could make a second bid for the 34-year-old.

"I can see the arrival of Riquelme in Brazil," Sorin said. "All Cruzeiro fans ask for it, but a lot will depend on him. The cub asked me to contact him and his representative, but at the time the deal did not happen. But we can resume the conversations for a second attempt."

Since leaving Boca Juniors in July, Riquelme has been linked to a number of clubs in South America and Sorin understands why there has been so much interest.

"Riquelme is highly respected and admired in Brazil," he said. "He could develop their talent in a very interesting league, with a great salary thanks to a strong economy. All Argentines who are in Brazil enjoy a good time and are much loved by fans. Roman will be no exception."
