Hernandez: Win may have changed title

Javier Hernandez believes his winner against Chelsea on Sunday may have pushed Manchester United into the box seat for the Premier League title.

• United close gap on Chelsea
• Di Matteo anger at referee
• Blog: Football lost in hatred cloud

Hernandez netted in the 75th minute to seal a 3-2 victory for United - their first at Stamford Bridge in over a decade. Sir Alex Ferguson's men have now claimed five successive wins, moving them to within one point of league-leading Chelsea.

"This game could have changed the title," said Hernandez. "That's why it was important we didn't allow them to get ahead. It was vital to get the three points at a very tough place. We are in there in the fight to win [the Premier League]."

Referee Mark Clattenburg has dominated the headlines after the match. Hernandez appeared to be in an offside position as he finished off a cross from Rafael, but the 24-year-old insists he is not concerned by the controversy which has swelled since the final whistle.

"I don't care ... the referee counted it," he said. "When Robin [van Persie] shot and [Petr] Cech made a great save I went for the rebound and the ball went to Rafael.

"The first thing was to get along the line of defenders because I thought that was where the ball was going to go. Thankfully I reacted well to it."

The Mexico international has scored three goals in his past two appearances at club level, but played down his recent run of form.

"It doesn't matter who scores the goals," Hernandez said. "It has been a good week for me. But the most important thing for me is to have the minutes on the pitch and help the team."

Ferguson, meanwhile, says he was suitably impressed by Hernandez's performance, and is believed to be considering the striker for a starting role in Wednesday's Capital One match against Chelsea.

"He's brilliant in there and he took a lot of punishment, too, there were a lot of tackles against him," Ferguson said. "But he's such a courageous little lad, such a tough cookie. He's always going to be a threat to defenders and he's got the winning goal in an important game."
