Redknapp and Berg top Rovers list

Blackburn Rovers will interview Henning Berg on Monday and Harry Redknapp on Tuesday as they step up their search for a manager.

•  Blackburn announcement soon

Berg was a Premier League title winner as a defender at Ewood Park while Redknapp, who was sacked by Tottenham in the summer, is an ambitious target for the Championship club.

The 65-year-old is willing to talk to Blackburn, who sit fifth in the Championship and have set their set their sights on an immediate return to the top flight.

Redknapp, who was the favourite for the England job before Roy Hodgson was appointed, has taken Spurs to top-five finishes in the last three Premier League seasons. He has not worked in the Championship since leaving Southampton in December 2005 but took Portsmouth up to the Premier League in 2003 and would satisfy Rovers' demand for a manager who plays attractive football.

Blackburn initially planned to appoint a younger manager but would be prepared to make an exception for a candidate of Redknapp's calibre.

Berg's status as a former player at the club is also viewed favourably. Tim Sherwood and Billy McKinlay, former team-mates of Berg, were under consideration but their lack of management experience is thought to have counted against them. The 43-year-old, whose successful spell at Manchester United was sandwiched by two stints at Ewood Park, took Lyn Oslo to third in the Norwegian league in 2005 and has also managed Lillestrom.

He was part of Blackburn's title-winning team in 1995 and captained Rovers in their 2002 League Cup victory against Tottenham.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway is also under consideration, with Rovers' managing director Derek Shaw believed to be keen on the former Leicester and QPR manager, while Huddersfield's Simon Grayson, another former Blackburn player, has also been linked.

After fans' protests when Sherwood and McKinlay were the front-runners, Blackburn have changed tack and are looking for managers with more of a pedigree.
