Wilson signs new deal

Marc Wilson has signed a new four-year contract with Stoke City - despite being out of action until the New Year with a broken leg.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis is keen to demonstrate the club's commitment to the former Portsmouth defender, following the injury Wilson suffered in the weekend draw with Sunderland.

Talks have been ongoing for around three weeks about an extended deal for the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland defender, who has been labelled an "unsung hero" by Pulis.

The details of the contract were agreed in principle 48 hours before Wilson's injury at the Britannia Stadium, which will keep him out of action for around three months.

It is the latest example of Pulis' reputation for looking after his players. In recent seasons he has sanctioned new deals for Rory Delap and Mamady Sidibe when both players were sidelined with long-term injuries and has now added Wilson's name to that list.

Wilson only had 18 months of the deal he signed when moving from Fratton Park in 2010 still to run and has proved himself to be a vital member of the Stoke squad with his versatility.

He signed as a midfielder, but has been operating at left-back for long periods, because of the absence of a specialist for that position in the Potters' 25-man squad.

Wilson confirmed the serious nature of his injury on his Twitter account, saying: "Have broken my fibula. Hopefully I can make a speedy recovery."

The injury to Wilson could provide further defensive problems for Pulis, who spent much of the summer trying to bring in a specialist left-back, after being linked with Blackburn Rover's Martin Olsson and Macedonia defender Goran Popov.
