Cattermole signs new Sunderland deal

Sunderland skipper Lee Cattermole has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract with the club.

• Blog: Still backing O'Neill

Cattermole, who joined from Wigan in 2009, has committed himself to the the Black Cats until 2016, the club said on its official website.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who has been sent off seven times in his career, was named club captain at the start of the 2010-11 season, an appointment made by Sunderland's former manager Steve Bruce.

Cattermole made his senior football debut as a 17-year-old Middlesbrough player, making 91 first-team appearances for the Riverside Stadium club before moving to Wigan for a season.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It feels like it's taken a bit of time, but the gaffer made it clear to me at the end of the season that he wanted to keep me, so I'm glad it's been sorted.

"If you look at our signings in the summer, I think you can see that we have made some big signings and I think it's the best place for me at the minute.''

Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill praised Cattermole, who returnd to action at Stoke following a spell on the sidelines after his sending off at MK Dons in the Capital One Cup.

O'Neill told the club's official website: "I think Lee, as captain of the side, gives us that little bit of steel. He brings drive and determination into the game."
