Pardew: Newcastle deserved luck

Alan Pardew has welcomed his side's good fortune as Newcastle beat West Brom 2-1 thanks to a late Papiss Cisse goal.

• Cisse breaks Baggies hearts
• Heneage: Tough Toon return for Clarke

With the game poised at 1-1 it looked like the points were going to be shared. Romelu Lukaku's second-half equaliser had cancelled out Demba Ba's opener, before Sammy Ameobi's speculative shot went in via Cisse's back to give Newcastle their first win in five games in added time.

Pardew believes the slice of luck was deserved, before claiming his side are struggling to handle the relentless schedule that Europa League participation has handed them.

"We've won the game and we'll take that," the Newcastle boss said. "We've not had many breaks this season. We perhaps deserved to win at Sunderland, and today we've got a goal in a game we did not deserve to win but we have.

"We've had a tough week and we looked tired physically and emotionally today. We've got to look at how we approach Sunday games after the Thursdays, because we are struggling. The second half was a struggle."

Meanwhile Pardew's opposite number Steve Clarke was left to bemoan his side's failure to earn at least a point, despite being the "best team" on the day.

It was the Baggies second defeat on the bounce, and left them eighth, but the positive performance left Clarke optimistic that they can regain their early season form again.

Clarke said: "I thought we were terrific and it's disappointing when you come to a place like this and you're the best team and not only do you not get a point but you don't come away with anything.

"We've got a good squad of players and I think our performances have been really good. With a little bit of luck over the last couple of games we could have even more points, but we've been stuck on 14 which is cruel and not fair."
