Ozil goals are down to Sanchez - Henry

Manchester derby: History of cup clashes

Gervinho settling into central role

Arsenal striker Gervinho has insisted he is enjoying his role as a central striker, despite coming under a barrage of criticism following his lacklustre display in the Champions League defeat against Schalke on Wednesday night.

Manager Arsene Wenger believes Gervinho can follow in Thierry Henry's footsteps by stepping away from his role as a winger and making his mark at the spearhead of his new look Gunners side and the Ivorian is keen to make the most of his opportunity.

"In the middle, it gives you lots of options," he told the Official Arsenal Magazine. "You can make a run on the right, on the left, deep in the centre. It's a big advantage. I feel good there and I am working hard to improve in that position. I don't have the physical ability to play in the air or to hold the ball up so I am learning how I can make the best of my qualities for that position.

"I am working very hard at training to improve my efficiency, to be more clinical in front of goal. This has been my flaw so far. I know I still have a lot more to learn but I am more confident now. The start of the season and my goals so far have showed that I have improved a lot."

Gervinho said the unflinching support of Wenger has filled him with confidence and he is convinced he can defy his critics and emerge as a key figure in a revamped Arsenal forward line.

"The manager has been very important," he confirmed. "He talks to me a lot, he tells me what I did right and wrong and what I should do better in the next game. It's very important to have a relationship like that with your manager.

"I will be happy with my season only if the team does well and wins things. I don't mind about my own stats, goals or assists. I want to help the team to have a great season. I will give everything and never give up."
