Benaglio denies Magath player revolt

Wolfsburg captain Diego Benaglio has denied any truth in the rumour that Felix Magath's sacking was down to a player rebellion.

• Magath sacked

Magath was sacked on Thursday with his side bottom of the table, having failed to pick up a point or score a single goal in their last four matches.

Reports in Hamburger Abendblatt stated that six players had conversed with the club's board over the possibility of sacking the manager, with only one opting in favour of Magath.

However, Benaglio, 29, insists that the players were not aware of the board wanting rid of their boss until after the sacking.

"We were informed after the decision [to sack Magath] was made," he told Bild.

Reserves coach Lorenz Gunter Kostner, who will look after the club while they search for a new manager, also claims he was unaware of the board's decision until afterwards.

"I was in the sauna, and about to head to lunch, then watch a match between Hannover II and Bremen II," he told Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.

"I switched on my mobile and I had Francisco Garcia-Sanz (Wolfsburg board member) asking to call back. I did that and they told me Magath was no longer the coach and asked if I wanted to take over. It is my duty to help, and I think, Felix Magath agrees with that."

Wolfsburg also need to find a new general manager as Magath was the only coach in the Bundesliga covering both jobs.

According to Bild, former Bayern Munich director of football Christian Nerlinger is favorite to land the job.
