Bielsa disappointed by defeat

Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelo Bielsa was downbeat after his side again conceded late on to lose 2-1 to Lyon in Thursday's Europa League Group I clash at the Stade de Gerland.

The defeat now leaves the Basque side, conquerors of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Schalke on the way to last season's final, with just one point from three games in this year's competition.

While their Argentine boss has now conceded that it is starting to look very unlikely that his side will make the knock-out stages, he is not ruling it out just yet.

"After winning just one point from nine you cannot be optimistic," Bielsa said. "I understand that three wins will send us through. I am not giving up on that possibility."

Despite falling behind to Lisandro Lopez's header just after half time, Athletic fought back and deservedly equalised when Fernando Llorente set up fellow substitute Ibai Gomez with 12 minutes remaining.

The visitors seemed to have the momentum, but winger Markel Susaeta missed a clear chance to win it for his side before Lyon attacker Jimmy Briand poked home from close range to maintain the Ligue 1 side's 100% record in this season's competition.

And Bielsa was unable to hide his disappointment at the way Athletic threw away the game in its closing moments when they should have taken the ascendancy following their equaliser.

"We were in charge on 85 minutes and in the moment where you would think there would be most calm, the game turned around and we suffered more than in the whole game," Bielsa said. "The equaliser seemed to affect us more than them. It is difficult to explain. We had a chance to win. I find it hard to attribute it to luck."
