Galaxy defeat Isidro Metapan

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador -- Michael Stephens scored in the 80th minute to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Isidro Metapan 3-2 on Thursday night in the last group match in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Jack McBean gave the MLS team a 1-0 lead in the first half with a header, but El Salvador's Isidro Metapan responded in the second half with Paolo Suarez's goal in the 54th-minute. McBean scored again 7 minutes later, and El Salvador's Nicolas Munoz quickly countered on a free kick to tie it at 2.

Los Angeles played without star forwards David Beckham and Robbie Keane.

As the fourth seed, the Galaxy will play Costa Rica's Herediano in the quarterfinals that begin in March.

In the other quarterfinal matchups, No. 1 Monterrey faces Xelaju of Guatemala, No. 2 Santos Laguno will play the Houston Dynamo, and the No. 3 Seattle Sounders face Mexico's UANL.

Los Angeles, which had already wrapped up a quarterfinal spot, finished 3-0-1 in the three-team group. The Puerto Rico Islanders were second at 1-2-1, and Isidro Metapan was last at 1-3-0.
