Mourinho: No Champions League drama

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is confident his team remain well placed to progress from a very difficult Champions League group after last night's 1-2 reverse at Borussia Dortmund.

• Blog: Comfort of home favors Real in return clash

Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski and Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo scored within minutes of one another midway through the first period, but the home side's greater drive after half-time was rewarded when Marcel Schmelzer volleyed in the winner.

After Manchester City's shock loss at Ajax in the other Group D game, Madrid remain in second spot, one point behind leaders Dortmund.

He told reporters after Wednesday night's clash at the Westfalenstadion that his team were still in the driving seat to progress from by far the most difficult group in this year's competition, with both the Germans and Ajax still to visit the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

"We are not satisfied at losing a match, but there is no drama," Mourinho said. "We are second. Everyone knows that this is 'the group' and there are others that are jokes. Now we have two home matches, with six points well within reach. That could be enough to get through."

Real Madrid lost Sami Khedira to injury early in the first half, and had Michael Essien playing out of position at left-back, but Mourinho refused to use injuries as an excuse, claiming the game could have gone either way.

"In the second half, we said that a goal from us would win it and one from them would lose us the match," he said. "They scored and closed up shop. We created lots of chances. The goals did not come. Both of theirs came from the same situation. The danger came from the counter-attack."

Ronaldo, who continued his record of scoring in each European game this season, said that the Dortmund players, who were roared on by 80,000 home fans, seemed to have extra motivation.

"Football is like that, you cannot always win," he said. "Every team gives their life against us. They were not physically better than us, but they had enthusiasm, with the stadium and their fans, that gives them motivation to play."

Xabi Alonso told reporters that he felt his team had been a little unlucky not to have picked up a point.

"A draw would have been fairer but football produces these things," he said. "We knew they are a hard working team who know how to attack and defend and that did not surprise us. The first goal was following a mistake by us and the second was a bit lucky."

Madrid's game at Manchester City's Eastlands stadium on November 21 would now be crucial, Alonso added.

"With the Manchester City's defeat everything is very tight and for us the upcoming matches and our visit to Manchester will be critical," he said. "This is a very difficult group and we knew that this away match was one of the toughest."
