Huntelaar praises confident Schalke

Schalke goal hero Klaas-Jan Huntelaar said his side were delighted by their 2-0 Champions League win against Arsenal at the Emirates - but added that he believed they could have played even better.

Huntelaar, 29, opened the scoring with just under 15 minutes remaining and Ibrahim Afellay doubled the advantage as the clock ticked towards full-time.

Schalke's triumph ended Arsenal's nine-year undefeated run against overseas clubs at the Emirates, and Netherlands international Huntelaar said: "When Ibrahim Affelay went for the header, I gambled on getting behind the defence.

"We were well organised in defence, and we played calmly and confidently. We played well - but against Dortmund [in the Bundesliga last weekend] we were even better and attacked more aggressively."

Huntelaar could have opened the scoring two minutes before the break but failed to put away Jefferson Farfan's cross from close range.

And at half-time, Schalke general manger Horst Heldt said his side had been "too careless" in front of goal and expressed the hope that they would be more clinical after the break.

Despite centre-back Benedikt Howedes putting the ball over the top after another Farfan cross from the right early in the second period, Schalke did what he had wanted.

"We can be very happy and pleased with what we achieved against Dortmund and Arsenal," Heldt said afterwards. "It was the right answer after our 2-2 draw against Montpellier."

Peru international Farfan, who gave Andre Santos a torrid time on the wing, told reporters it was "fantastic to win in London" and added: "We had a great match and were the deserved winners. It was a strong overall performance, and it can continue like this."

"We will not rest on our recent wins. We are already fired up for the Nurnberg match [in the Bundesliga]."

Midfielder Lewis Holtby also looked ahead to Nurnberg, saying: "We will not become cocky. Nurnberg are up next on Saturday, and we need to win the next three points there. It's fun to play in this team."
