Rios puts Universidad into last eight

An away goal from Michael Rios was enough to see Universidad Catolica through to the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals despite a 3-1 defeat to Atletico Goianense.

A 2-0 win for Universidad in the first-leg had given Juan Martin Lasarte's side a good advantage but strikes from Joilson and Ronie quickly brought Atletico level in the return game. Marcio also scored a penalty late on but Rios' goal before half-time sent the Cruzados through on away goals.

"Yes, we suffered a lot, but the most important thing is that we are among the best eight teams in the continent," Lasarte said. "(But) we have to improve our performance as visitors if we want to progress even further."

The Chilean outfit will now face either Argentinian side Independiente or Uruguayan team Liverpool in the last eight of the competition

Gremio also progressed with a 2-1 win against Barcelona in Porto Alegre giving them a 3-1 aggregate victory. Jose Perlaza and Ze Roberto both scored as Wanderlei Luxemburgo's side fought back to win. Narciso Mina opened the scoring in the 55th minute. In the quarter-finals the Tricolor will meet Colombian side Millonarios, who overcame Palmeiras.

In the other game Sao Paulo also moved into the last eight. A goalless draw at home to LDU Loja, which followed a 1-1 draw in the first-leg in Ecuador was enough for them to go through on away goals. The Brazilian team will now face Ecuador's Emelec or reigning Copa Sudamericana champions Universidad de Chile.
