Pardew concerned by Tiote discipline

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has admitted to having concerns over the disciplinary record of midfielder Cheick Tiote.

Tiote, 26, who was dismissed during his side's 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Sunday has picked up 27 yellow cards in 54 matches for the Magpies.

And Pardew has confirmed his intention to speak to his player ahead of the side's Europa League tie against Club Brugge on Thursday.

"I do have some worries about Tiote's discipline," Pardew said.

"I will be talking to him before the Brugge game. We talk to him before every game. We talk to him at every half-time and I'll be talking to him again."

With the former FC Twente player the most booked player in the league last season, Pardew was keen to stress the severity of the issue, also admitting Tiote's absence is a big miss.

"It's not a laughing matter because he's one of our big players and I can't have him not playing," he said.

"It could be costly and he needs to understand that."

Despite accepting the decision of Martin Atkinson to dismiss Tiote, Pardew did concede that he felt football was changing, with far too many bookings being handed out.

"I do think that part of the game has changed. Where we are at the moment is that almost every mistimed tackle is a booking," he said.

"There is going to be this type of challenge. Referees need to understand that it's a genuine attempt to get the ball and nothing more. That's why we devised this award for a free-kick. It's not always a yellow card.

"So the sanitisation of the game is a little bit worrying for me because I like the physical side. I think we all do as supporters."
