Gotze set for Dortmund return

Borussia Dortmund could welcome back Mario Gotze and Marcel Schmelzer as they attempt to claim their first ever victory against Real Madrid in a game which sees the German and Spanish champions meet.

Dortmund have not enjoyed the best of starts to the season, and come into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat by local rivals Schalke in the 141st Revierderby over the weekend.

Injuries saw Jurgen Klopp opt to change the tactics for the Schalke match, after Germany internationals Gotze, Schmelzer and Ilkay Gundogan as well as Poland skipper Jakub Blaszczykowski all missed the game.

The change in formation did not help Dortmund's cause and Klopp announced he would revert back to the more familiar 4-2-3-1 for the Champions League clash with Group C favourites Real as he prepares for the return of some key players.

"It looks like Gotze and Schmelzer can play," he said. "And we have to wait and see how Ilkay's body reacts to the training session."

Expectations are high ahead of the visit of Jose Mourinho's side, with midfielder Sven Bender claiming "That game is a highlight," while Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke commented "We face the maybe most famous club in the world."

But speaking to a press conference on Tuesday, Klopp was keen for his players not to be awestruck by their visitors' all-star line-up.

Asked by a Spanish reporter, if he had realised that Real conceded a lot of goals from set-pieces and if it was one of Real's weak points, Klopp grinned: "Si"

"It is a major challenge," he added. "We have to work against the ball (and be) extremely disciplined."
