Senegal sack Koto after qualifying failure

Senegal have axed coach Joseph Koto after his failure to guide the country to the 2013 African Nations Cup finals in South Africa.

The Lions of Teranga will not compete at January's continental showpiece - the second time they have failed to make it in the past three tournaments - after being disqualified for crowd trouble during the second leg of their qualifier against Ivory Coast ten days ago.

Senegal were heading for a 2-0 home defeat in Dakar, having already lost the away first leg 4-2, when ugly scenes broke out following the conversion of a Didier Drogba penalty 15 minutes from time.

A 40-minute delay ensued but with security staff failing to restore calm, the match was abandoned and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later disqualified Senegal.

Senegal Football Federation (FSF) vice president Louis Lamotte resigned from his post in the aftermath of the incident and Koto has now followed him out of the exit door, having been sacked along with assistant Karim Sega Diouf.

Koto, who played for the Senegal national team in the 1980s, had only been in the job for four months after replacing Pierre Lechantre, who himself had also only been in the post for a matter of months having succeeded Amara Traore following the nation's failure to progress through the group stage at the 2012 African Nations Cup.

Despite boasting some of the Africa's best attacking talent, including Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Moussa Sow, Senegal have struggled to make an impression on the continental stage in recent years.

The 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists begin their qualifying campaign for Brazil 2014 next year as they look to emerge from a group containing Uganda, Angola and Liberia.
