Confusion over Freedman move

Bolton caretaker manager Jimmy Phillips has said he will be in charge of Wanderers when they travel to Middlesbrough this weekend, casting doubt on whether Dougie Freedman's appointment has been confirmed.

It appeared that the deal had been done when Crystal Palace announced on Tuesday that Freedman had left his post at Selhurst Park to take over at Wanderers.

Former Palace player Freedman has made a strong impression in his first managerial role, and Bolton moved for him after sacking Owen Coyle following a disappointing start to life back in the Championship.

But Phillips, speaking after his side had drawn 2-2 with Wolves at Molineux thanks to a late equaliser, said talks over Freedman had yet to be concluded, while Wanderers have yet to respond to Palace's announcement.

"As far we are aware, there are still negotiations to be concluded between Bolton and Crystal Palace," Phillips said.

"Myself, Sammy Lee and Julian Darby [Bolton coaches] will be preparing the team and then taking the team at Middlesbrough.

"That is as much as I know. Obviously things could change, but that is what I was told."

Palace had rebuffed an earlier Bolton approach for Freedman, but on Tuesday the South London club's official website said: "The board of the club would like to put on record their thanks to Dougie for all his efforts over the past couple of years. The search for a replacement starts immediately."

Freedman's assistant Lennie Lawrence and coach Curtis Fleming replaced him in the dug-out for the 1-1 draw at Barnsley on Tuesday.

The Scot led Palace to 17th place last season, and had taken them up to fourth this season with an unbeaten run of eight games, six of which were won.
