Rodgers could give Sterling a rest

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will consider giving Raheem Sterling a break in the second half of the season if the teenage winger tires as a result of his heavy workload.

Sterling, 17, has established himself in the Liverpool side and scored his first senior goal in Saturday's 1-0 win over Reading.

With Fabio Borini out injured for three months and Rodgers unable to add to his forward line on the final day of the transfer window, he has become a key figure at Anfield and earned praise from Steven Gerrard.

Rodgers has been impressed by Sterling's fitness, as well as his performances, but accepts there may be a time when he needs to rest the England Under-21 international.

"It's always something I always assess, like with all the young players," he said. "But he's got a really strong mentality and nothing fazes him.

"Don't get me wrong, there might be stages in the second half of the season when I maybe need to give him a breather, but certainly, at this moment in time, he's as fit as a fiddle. That's his big attribute."

Rodgers has already said he hopes to strengthen his attacking options when the transfer window reopens in January.

He deployed Sterling as a substitute in Liverpool's last Europa League game, against Udinese, and has to decide whether to select him for Thursday's clash with Anzhi Makhachkala at Anfield.
