Ashworth working on summer transfers

West Brom sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth will ensure stability for head coach Steve Clarke by working on all the club's transfer plans for the August 2013 window, before leaving the Hawthorns for the Football Association.

Ashworth is expected to begin his new role revamping England's coaching set-up as the FA's new director of elite development at the start of next season. But he is determined his departure will cause minimum upheaval at the club he has served for eight years.

He has become one of the most influential men at West Brom in recent years and is already working on recruitment plans for next summer, despite his imminent exit.

Speaking for the first time since his FA appointment, Ashworth said he will be co-ordinating the club's January transfer moves and has already confirmed West Brom's plans for next summer.

"For the first time last summer there probably wasn't any criticism of our transfer work," he said. "I think everyone agreed we filled the slots. So short of any injuries, or fantastic offers, I can't see us doing much in January.

"When the window closed on August 31, an email went out the next day with our summer targets. We are now looking towards summer 2013 and we will spend the coming months doing that.

"If any are available in January ready for our summer either on pre-contract, which we can do from abroad, or people running into the final six months of their contracts, then maybe.

"But we know the positions we want to strengthen next season. The board meetings we have all take into account of where we might need to strengthen, who is getting older, who might want to move on."

Ashworth is helping the club search for his successor, playing a central role in the recruitment process. He has revealed he is working through between 50 and 60 applicants from England and overseas, who have applied for his role at the club.
