Lyon to finally begin work on new stadium

Lyon have finally announced plans to begin work on their new stadium, hoped to be completed in June 2015 - ready to be a host venue for Euro 2016.

After several years of waiting the club announced that work on Stade des Lumieres will start soon, despite the finalisation of contracts with constructors Vinci yet to be sorted.

"We have decided to attack the first part of the work in order to remain in the schedule given to UEFA," club owner Jean-Michel Aulas told radio station RMC.

"We started the programme to avoid getting in trouble. It will last between four and seven months."

With a capacity of 58,000 seats, the stadium will be "the best" of Euro 2016, Aulas added.

Much of the stadium's delay has been down to the opposition the project has faced, with organisations protesting against the legal work not having yet been signed.

"They will put a shovel and a truck on the ground to say they begin work just to reassure UEFA," said President of Carton Rouge Franck Buronfosse.

"But not until they have found all solutions can they go any further. Clearly, Vinci the manufacturer has not signed."

Aulas is hoping Lyon will be able to move into the stadium in time to kick off the 2015-2016 season. This complies with UEFA's requirement that any new stadium has to be delivered a year before a major competition.
