Dortmund facing injury problems

Borussia Dortmund look set to be without injured duo Marcel Schmelzer and Ilkay Gundogan for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Real Madrid while they are sweating on the fitness of Mario Gotze.

Schmelzer, 24, who has a bruised bone, trained individually on Monday but has not gained any match fitness since picking up the injury while on international duty last week.

Gundogan, 21, has compression of the lower back after picking up the injury in Dortmund's Champions League tie with Manchester City. Despite having received treatment and injections he has yet to return to training.

"There is still an issue with my back," Gundogan told Kicker on Monday. "It has not got better."

The only positive on the injury front for manager Jurgen Klopp is that Gotze, 20, who returned from international duty with a thigh problem, trained with the team on Monday and could return to a side in desperate need of creativity.

"It is going to be a race against the clock," Dortmund director of football Michael Zorc told Ruhr Nachrichten.

The trio along with Jakub Blaszczykowski were sidelined for Saturday's 2-1 derby defeat to Schalke forcing Klopp into changing his system from 4-2-3-1 to 3-5-2, resulting in turmoil for his defence.

Klopp is likely to go back to a 4-2-3-1 formation for Wednesday. Schmelzer could be replaced by Kevin Grosskreutz, while Gotze, Maco Reus and Robert Lewandowski could form the attacking midfield, with Julian Schieber as the target man up front.
