Carroll hopeful of a return to Anfield

West Ham's on-loan striker Andy Carroll has not given up hope of a return to Liverpool - a place in which he believes he was never given a "fair chance" - ESPN understands.

• Blog: Hammers turn the tables

Carroll, 23, does not want to commit his long-term future to Upton Park despite making an impact at the club and manager Sam Allardyce desperate for him to stay.

West Ham sources have told ESPN that they have a £19 million agreement in place with Liverpool should any loan deal become permanent. However, no deal has been agreed with the England international beyond the end of the season.

There is even a cut-off point in January where Liverpool have the choice to recall Carroll but manager Brendan Rodgers has already indicated, despite being short of strikers, that he won't take him back prematurely.

While it seems there is no way back for the former Newcastle man as long as Rodgers is in charge, the player is believed to be keeping his options open on account of Liverpool's mixed start to the season.

The Merseyside club only picked up their first home win of the season in the 1-0 win against Reading on Saturday and currently sit 12th. The newly-promoted Hammers, in contrast, have enjoyed a positive start and are seventh in the table.

West Ham are doing their utmost to persuade Carroll his future lies at Upton Park, with the player's links to Allardyce and club captain Kevin Nolan influencing him to move south in the first place.

But they may face a difficult challenge with the striker having hoped he would be staying put at Anfield as late as on the morning of the transfer deadline day - the day in which his loan deal was completed.
