Cech: AVB presence no extra motivation

Petr Cech says Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas' history with Chelsea added extra "spice" when the two sides met on Saturday but denied it gave the players an extra incentive to win.

Chelsea's trip to White Hart Lane was the first time the club had been reunited with their former boss since his sacking in March, after just nine months in charge.

And the European champions sent out a statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League with an impressive 4-2 victory over Villas-Boas' current charges, thanks to strikes from Gary Cahill, Daniel Sturridge and a brace from Juan Mata.

Yet, while conceding it made the game more exciting, Cech believes Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo may have been the only one with an added incentive after working as the former Porto manager's assistant at Stamford Bridge.

"Us players did not take it in such a way," Cech said. "Perhaps it was more special for the managers because Andre and Roberto worked together at Chelsea last season.

"The presence of Andre surely made the atmosphere more spicy. Before and after the match he said hello to us, he shook hands with everyone and we exchanged a few words. It was nice to see him again."

Villas-Boas took charge at Chelsea in June 2011 but his spell was brought to an abrupt end following a run of poor results as well as questions being raised about his tactical strategies and his working relationship with the club's senior players.
