Genoa sack De Canio, Del Neri set for job

Genoa have fired Luigi De Canio following the 4-2 defeat to Roma at the weekend.

The club had led 2-0 in the fixture after 15 minutes before Roma club fought back, leading club president Enrico Preziosi to make De Canio the fourth manager to lose his job in Serie A this season.

Former Juventus coach Luigi Del Neri has already been identified as the club's favoured choice to replace De Canio. Del Neri has been out of work since leaving Juve at the end of the 2010-11 season.

Preziosi has explained the thinking behind axing De Canio, telling the ANSA news agency: "At this time it was right to change, I immediately took Del Neri because I was afraid he was going to be somewhere else."

And the Genoa chief confirmed that he would be willing to strengthen the playing squad in January in a bid to avoid a relegation battle. "Reinforcements arrive in January," Preziosi added.

Former QPR and Napoli boss De Canio helped Genoa stay in Serie A last season and despite the club lying in ninth place at present, Genoa's hierarchy have deemed a change necessary.
