Foster 'gutted' after late City defeat

Ben Foster admits West Bromwich Albion were devastated by the final kick in the teeth from Manchester City on the day their 100% home League record ended.

Albion, having already sent Liverpool, Everton, Reading and QPR home empty-handed this season, were pushing hard for a winner until being caught in the dying moments by Edin Dzeko's classic breakaway winner to lose 2-1.

"We're gutted," Foster said. "I thought we played really well. Them going down to ten men helped us a lot but, even before that, I thought we were playing really well.

"It was brutal really; a brutal finish to a game we deserved to get a lot more out of. When you've got £70 million worth of players to bring on in the 80th minute, it shows what resources are available. Fair dos, City took their chances but it doesn't change the fact we are gutted."

Just as Joe Hart had to hold his hands up after Poland's World Cup qualifying equaliser in midweek, so Foster - his likely No. 2 were he to end his international exile - accepted blame for the goal that levelled the scores on Saturday.

Albion fans chanted long and loud in favour of their man but were stunned by the dramatic change of events after Shane Long's fortunate breakthrough.

"The first one was a horrible one," Foster added. "It was a great ball in to be fair. I thought I'd go and get something on it. Once you are on your way, you kind of think: 'Heck, here we go.' You are hoping the defender gets it but it was a great ball in and a great header as well. I should have stayed on my line.

"The second one... it's credit to us that we are trying to win the game against Man City. We are giving it a go at least. They break on us and that is what £70 million worth of talent does to you.

"I don't think City are head and shoulders above anyone. You saw Chelsea... they demolished Tottenham, which takes some doing at White Hart Lane, and United carried on their usual thing. It will be from those three. It is close amongst them all.

"To bounce back the way he did from England, that's Joe all over. He is so mentally strong. He kind of forgets about it straightaway and he made some great saves and kept his team in the game."
